The NY Liberty have announced that they have signed 6’1 G-F, Kennedy Valentine Burke.
Kennedy Burke is a 2019 WNBA draft pick by the Dallas Wings. She played for the Indiana Fever, Seattle Storm, and Washington Mystics. Most recently played in the Euroleague for the French club, Villeneuve where she is making a stamp.
Kennedy’s Euroleague stats were impressive as she averaged 15.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 3.2 spg and 2.5 apg. She was also named the Euroleague Women MVP for the month of December after being the main catalyst behind an unbeaten period for her French club.
Kennedy is a versatile player, she has the size to play multiple positions, she is very skillful and has great energy for the bench that the Liberty desperately needs.
I think she has the opportunity to be a key piece and sincerely believe when New York fans see her play she will become a fan favorite not just with her play but the overall vibe that Kennedy brings to the locker room.
Kennedy has a toughness about her that NY needs. She is not only tough on the court but also off the court. She has gone through the ups and downs of basketball and gone through tests that show her character under pressure and hostile environments playing over seas.
I go back to an article from the Medium, written by Wayne Cole discussing the encounters of harassment and racism overseas that Kennedy experienced during a game but it was her response to this kind of ignorance she faced that will be highlighted and I encourage readers to listen to her story and her response. Kennedy’s resilience, leadership, and skill will be a great fit for the Liberty.
This move was a sneaky good move to improve the Liberty bench and upgrade the team’s depth. They got a 2 way player, who will provide immediate impact to the team’s needs. Jonathon Kolb has done an amazing job in retaining the core while continuing to build around it.
Welcome to the Big Apple Kennedy! We are looking forward to seeing you in Seafoam and bringing that energy to Barclays!
