Liberty Basketball's Preseason Kickoff: A matchup with the Sky

Liberty basketball is unofficially back today with its first preseason game action. This match marks one of two preseason games they will play this week. They are set to take on the revamped Chicago Sky, paying a visit to Liberty legend and new Head Coach of the Sky, Theresa Weatherspoon, for their first glimpse at lottery picks Angel Reese and Camila Cardosa. Unfortunately, Camila will sit out this game due to a shoulder injury sustained in Friday’s preseason game, sidelining the No. 3 overall pick for 4-6 weeks.

On the Liberty side, both Kennedy Burke and Nyara Sabally are out for rest, while Ivana Dojkić is absent due to league-mandated medical evaluations, and Leonie Fiebich is away due to travel constraints. Fans will eagerly anticipate the debut of draft picks Marquesha Davis, Esmery Martinez, and Jessika Carter.

Originally, the game was not scheduled to be televised. However, following an uproar by WNBA fans over the lack of coverage on other games, it was announced that the game would be available on the WNBA app. This decision came after a fan live-streamed a game, attracting over 1 million viewers, showcasing the undeniable demand for WNBA content. This incident prompts many to question whether the league's growth is outpacing its capabilities.

As the 2024 season approaches, the Liberty and the Sky are in two distinct modes: for Chicago, it's a time of rebuilding, while for New York, the focus is on winning now.

Catch the Liberty & Sky game at 8 PM EST on the WNBA League Pass.
