New York, NY - Epiphanny Prince, a name synonymous with heart, hustle, and the hallowed streets of Brooklyn where legends are born, has officially announced her retirement from the WNBA after an illustrious 14 season career. Yet, this is not a farewell to the sport she loves, as Piph is set to embark on a pioneering journey with the New York Liberty, joining their basketball operations as the Director of Player & Community Engagement - a role that is the first of its kind for the franchise.
During her time in the WNBA, Piph had an electrifying presence on the court, embodying the New York style of play with her exceptional ball-handling skills, play making and an uncanny ability to perform under pressure. She proudly wore the NY Liberty jersey for five seasons between 2015-18 and in 2023, playing a pivotal role in leading the team to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2015. Piph leaves her playing career with accolades, including two WNBA championships, two All-Star selections, a Commissioner's Cup championship, and an All-WNBA Second Team honor. However, it was her legendary 113-point game in high school that cemented her status as a Brooklyn icon, shattering Cheryl Miller's previous record.
The news of her role came the morning after she announced retirement from the WNBA on IG yesterday.
"I'm very excited about my new role with the Liberty,” shared an enthusiastic Prince. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and can't wait to work with the coaching staff, players, and everyone in this great organization. Being in my hometown of Brooklyn makes it even more amazing, and I can't wait to play my part in helping the community."
Prince's dedication to Brooklyn and its community was evident even before her official transition into this new role, evident from the success of the 1st annual “Epiphanny Prince Winter Clinic” in Canarsie, Brooklyn. This initiative exhibits her commitment to giving back and nurturing the next generation of talent.
General Manager Jonathan Kolb praised Prince, stating, “We know Piph will be a phenomenal addition to our front office between her decorated playing experience, basketball IQ, and leaguewide knowledge. Piph’s legendary career is sewn within Brooklyn’s basketball fabric, and as a former Liberty player, this next step in her basketball journey is truly special."
This new role will allow Epiphanny to help further elevate the NY Liberty’s outreach in her community that is home.
Echoing Kolb's sentiments, CEO Keia Clarke expressed, “Piph embodies the true, community-driven spirit of the New York Liberty. As a long-standing and respected member of the Liberty organization, she will be an invaluable thought-partner for all aspects of the front office in this first-of-its-kind role. We can’t wait to see her impact.”
As the chapters continue to unfold in Prince's storied career, her transition from the hardwood to a role within the NY Liberty's operations signifies not just a new beginning for her but also a bright and promising future for the Liberty franchise and its community engagements.
